Wonderland

The floating dock platforms we had paid for never materialised, somebody took the money and did not deliver, which is how Wonderland ended up being built on an old houseboat platform the locals had been using as a trash barge.

We met the three Kevin's who ran one of the marinas, they had a hull, and we rebuilt the plan on the spot: an outrigger patio and second story improvised onto the platform. A fireplace, a piano, dragged out into the delta. A floating sod lawn off the back with its own kitchen. Room for six people to sleep on the roof.

The thing I remember is a cool night with the fire lit, several of us standing around with drinks, and somebody taking the Alice in Wonderland book off the shelf and starting to read passages aloud. That was exactly what it had been built for, and it took the boat existing before anyone could have described it.
